Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of composite or porcelain that are applied to the front surface of your teeth. They improve shape, colour or alignment and provide a subtle yet effective way to enhance your smile without invasive treatment.

What are veneers and when are they used?

A veneer covers the visible surface of a tooth and is mainly used on the front teeth, where appearance is most important. They can make teeth whiter, straighter or more even in shape. Veneers are suitable for discolouration, enamel defects, wear, minor misalignments or chipped edges. They offer a versatile solution for a range of cosmetic concerns.

Composite or porcelain

At Dovident we use both composite and porcelain veneers. Composite veneers are built directly, can be completed in a single appointment and are relatively affordable. They can be easily adjusted and deliver quick results. Porcelain veneers are produced in a dental laboratory and provide a natural, glossy appearance similar to tooth enamel. They are more colour-resistant and durable, but require more preparation and a second appointment. Which option suits you best depends on your teeth, wishes and budget.

Treatment procedure

Treatment always starts with a consultation and oral examination, during which we discuss your wishes and assess the possibilities. Sometimes we create a mock-up so you can see the expected outcome beforehand. For composite veneers the material is applied directly, shaped, cured and polished. For porcelain a small amount of enamel is removed and we take an impression or scan. You will receive temporary veneers and the final veneers are placed after two to three weeks.

Longevity and care

Veneers typically last five to ten years on average, depending on the material, your oral hygiene and habits. Porcelain is generally more durable but can be vulnerable to overload. Good daily care, regular check-ups and avoiding very hard or sticky foods will extend their lifespan. We may sometimes recommend a night guard if you grind your teeth. Veneers are suitable for discolouration, irregular shapes or small gaps, but we always assess the condition of your teeth and gums before starting.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does placing veneers hurt?
No. The placement of composite veneers is completely painless. For porcelain veneers we sometimes use local anaesthetic, for example if a small amount needs to be removed.
  • Are veneers permanent?
Composite veneers can generally be removed or adjusted. Porcelain veneers are semi-permanent. Although they last for many years, the treatment is not always fully reversible because a small amount of enamel may be removed.
  • How much do veneers cost?
The cost depends on the chosen material and the number of teeth involved. During the consultation you will always receive a clear price estimate in advance.
  • Do veneers discolour over time?
Composite can discolour somewhat over time, especially with frequent coffee, tea or smoking. Porcelain is colour-stable and retains its shine for longer.
  • Can I eat everything with veneers?
Yes, although we recommend being careful with extremely hard or sticky foods. If you grind your teeth or bite your nails, it may be necessary to wear a protective mouthguard.
