Teeth grinding

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (bruxism) can cause wear, cracks, muscle pain and even jaw problems. At Dovident we actively screen for signs of bruxism and provide customised night guards to protect your teeth.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the unconscious clenching or grinding of the teeth, usually during sleep. It occurs in both children and adults and can overload the chewing system. Many people are unaware of it, but experience symptoms such as facial muscle pain, headaches or chipped teeth.

Effects of teeth grinding

Long-term grinding or clenching can cause severe enamel wear, sensitivity, loose fillings or broken teeth. It can also lead to jaw joint problems and muscle fatigue. Because untreated bruxism can cause permanent damage, early detection is important. More information about repairing existing damage can be found on our page Restoring tooth wear.

Treatment with a night guard

A night guard, also called a splint, is a custom-made plastic appliance that you wear at night. It prevents direct contact between the upper and lower jaw, so the force of grinding is absorbed and the teeth are protected. It also helps the chewing muscles relax and reduces overload.

Course of treatment

After an intake and inspection of your teeth we take an impression or digital scan. The guard is then manufactured by the dental laboratory. At a second appointment we carefully adjust it to your bite and provide clear instructions on how to use it. Regular check-ups are important to ensure continued fit and function.
