Routine check-up

Regular check-ups are the foundation of a healthy mouth. During these appointments we assess the condition of your teeth, gums and jaw structures. This allows us to detect problems early and treat them in good time.

What does a routine check-up involve?

At a check-up we carefully examine every part of your mouth. We look for cavities, wear, gum inflammation, cracks in old fillings and other signs of problems. We also assess your jaw joints, the oral mucosa and the alignment of your teeth. If necessary we make additional notes or discuss any complaints or changes you have noticed.

Use of X-rays

We take X-rays based on risk. For an increased risk of cavities, small X-rays are taken once a year; for a lower risk, once every two years. This enables us to assess areas not visible to the naked eye, such as early cavities between teeth or infections at the root tips. Additional images are only taken when indicated, for example with pain complaints or to check the result of a previous treatment.

Individual approach

Although six months is a common frequency for check-ups, we always consider your personal situation. For a healthy mouth fewer visits may be sufficient, while people with increased risk of problems will benefit from more frequent checks. Together we decide what is appropriate for you.

Preventive role

The check-up is not only intended to detect problems but also to prevent them. By intervening early we can carry out small treatments before larger procedures become necessary. This saves costs, prevents discomfort and helps maintain your mouth’s health in the long term.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why do I need to attend twice a year?
This is a guideline that works well for most people. We adjust it based on your oral health and risks.
  • Does a check-up hurt?
No, a check-up is painless. If we find anything that requires further investigation, we will always explain it calmly.
  • Do I need to bring anything to the check-up?
Not necessarily. If you are experiencing any issues, it is helpful to mention them beforehand so we can pay extra attention.
  • Are X-rays always taken?
No, only when necessary or when it is time for the annual check-up images.
  • Is the check-up covered by insurance?
For children up to 18 years fully covered by the Dutch basic health insurance. For adults, coverage is usually from a supplementary dental insurance.
