Gewoon Gaaf

Gewoon Gaaf is a prevention programme specifically for children from 0 to 18 years. The aim is to help children maintain healthy, intact teeth for as long as possible. At Dovident we apply this programme in close cooperation with children and parents, tailored to the child’s age and risk profile.

What does Gewoon Gaaf involve?

Gewoon Gaaf is a Dutch national prevention programme from the Ivoren Kruis (a Dutch organisation for preventive oral healthcare) that has been proven effective in preventing caries (cavities). The core is regularly guiding and motivating children and their parents in maintaining good oral hygiene and developing healthy habits. We focus on brushing, diet, fluoride toothpaste and monitoring risks. Using visual aids and positive feedback, we make this enjoyable and motivating for children.

Guidance and risk-based working

Each age group requires its own approach. During appointments we discuss how the teeth are doing, what is going well and where improvements are possible. We give advice on brushing times, technique and diet, tailored to the child and the family. We work based on risk: children with low risk need fewer check-ups, while those at higher risk require more frequent contact. Where necessary we use tools such as plaque disclosing tablets or schedule follow-up appointments.

Working together with parents

An important part of the programme is cooperation with parents. They play a central role in teaching and supporting brushing habits. We provide clear explanations, practical tips and answer questions so parents feel supported and not talked down to. This creates a shared responsibility and children are guided step by step towards good oral health.

Effective in the long term

Gewoon Gaaf is not only effective but also fun for children. Through consistent guidance, compliments and positive communication children feel heard and motivated. This leads to lasting behaviour change, fewer cavities and better oral health in the long term. That way a child grows up with a healthy, intact set of teeth and keeps their smile.
