Aesthetic composite

Aesthetic composite is a versatile restorative material that allows us to improve the appearance of teeth without invasive procedures. It is a quick, affordable and tooth-friendly way to correct shape, colour or minor damage to teeth, often in a single appointment.

What is aesthetic composite used for?

Composite is used for both functional and cosmetic repairs. Think of filling broken corners, evening out tooth shapes, concealing discolouration or lengthening worn teeth. Small gaps can also be closed with it. Aesthetic composite also plays a role in combination treatments, for example after orthodontics or alongside veneers.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment starts with a shade selection and assessment of the tooth shape. The enamel is prepared with an etch-and-bond technique so the composite adheres well. We then apply the material layer by layer, shape it to the desired form and cure it with a special light. Finally the restoration is polished to achieve a natural shine and a smooth surface.

A natural-looking result

For aesthetic restorations a natural final result is essential. We use different shades and translucent layers to mimic the appearance of real teeth as closely as possible. Especially when restoring front teeth it is important that the filling blends seamlessly with the dentition. We therefore pay close attention to shape, texture and gloss.

Durability and aftercare

Composite restorations are durable with proper care. They are, however, more prone to staining than porcelain, particularly with frequent consumption of coffee, tea or tobacco. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups help keep the result looking good for longer. If necessary we can easily re-polish or replace a restoration.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is aesthetic composite the same as a regular filling?
The basic material is the same, but for aesthetic use we pay much more attention to shape, shade and appearance. It is more precise work and requires additional time and technique.
  • How long does composite stay looking good?
With good oral care aesthetic composite typically lasts five to ten years. In some cases it can last even longer.
  • Does composite discolour over time?
Yes, particularly with frequent use of staining products. We provide advice to limit discolouration and can re-polish or restore the surface if needed.
  • Is the treatment painful?
No. In most cases no anaesthetic is required. The enamel remains largely intact.
  • Can composite be used on every tooth?
In principle yes, but suitability depends on the tooth's location, the bite and the desired correction. We assess this in the consultation beforehand.
