Botulinum toxin has been used in dentistry for many years to relax overactive jaw muscles and help reduce a variety of complaints. Most people associate botox with cosmetic treatments, but in dentistry it is used because of its effect on muscle activity. By injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin into specific jaw or facial muscles, muscle activity is temporarily reduced. This can relieve symptoms and decrease the strain placed on the teeth, jaw muscles and jaw joints.

Botox may be suitable for conditions such as teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw clenching, overactive chewing muscles, certain temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and tension headaches related to excessive muscle tension. It may also be used to treat a gummy smile, where an excessive amount of gum tissue is visible when smiling. During the consultation, we carefully assess whether botox is an appropriate treatment for your individual situation.

The treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes. The effect is not immediate but gradually develops over the following days. On average, the results last between three and five months, after which the treatment can be repeated if appropriate. All treatments are performed safely by a BIG-registered dentist in accordance with current professional guidelines.
